Model Train Fun Derailed By Squeaky Rollingstock?

February 28th, 2010 | by admin |

Let’s face it. A squeaky model train can be really annoying, can’t it? I mean, you spend hours and hours researching you layout, dedicating hours online and maybe even going to the library, or even taking a road trip to get everything just perfect in your design.

Then you pour a lot of capital into this wonderful hobby of building your model train, with dreams of how she’ll run once you’ve got everything in the most recent expansion just right.

And perhaps you’ve even got her up and running for a while.

Then suddenly, those little squeaks start. Maybe only one or two in the beginning, but they keep coming, getting more and more frequent.

It can really take the fun out of it, I know!

If left unchecked long enough, those little squeaks will lead to big disaster! We’re talking serious derailment.

Squeaky model trains o scale, OO scale, HO scale, or whatever, all will jump their tracks because those squeaks are signs of friction: something somewhere is catching. And soon, that friction will build up enough to grab a rail or a switcher and throw the train off the rails.

What’s the remedy?
Surprisingly easy: just a drop of light oil where ever that annoying squeak is emanating from.

But be careful: clean up wherever you put that oil, because excess oil will grab dust particles and guess where that will head: right back off the rails!

Until next time!
