KoeN- Video Game Music Composition in FL Studio 7: ‘Senses’
September 3rd, 2009 | by admin |
Hi Everybody!
Most of you know me as that guy who loves playing his electronic drum kit- and though you are right, my love for music extends far beyond rubber pads and wooden sticks.
I’ve borrowed a midi keyboard from a close friend, and am currently learning my way around FL Studio, combining saxophone, drums, guitar and computer music composition to create my very own masterpieces (well, maybe masterpieces ONE day!)
This track is one I have been toying with for a while. In it i have combined my love for gaming with my love for music, and i have written a series of riffs inspired by my two favourite video game composers, Frank Klepacki (Red Alert 1 and 2) and Philippe Vachey (Relentless and Twinsens Odyssey, the two greatest video games of all time IMO, hehe).
I fleshed one of my riffs out, and this is what i came up with.
Feedback is GREATLY appreciated as always! I hope to make many more tracks like it (as well as a remix or two; Daft Punk, anyone?)
Also, for all you sax lovers, I noticed a severe lack of sax players on YouTube, and though i don’t play saxophone particularly well, I hope to chuck up something funky soon!
Oh, and to save everyone a couple of questions, here are some vital stats:
Track: Senses (3:26)
Guitar: Open C Yamaha Pacifica /w Guitar Rig
Drums: Yamaha DTXPLORER /w Roland SPDS & EZ Drummer
Piano: Midistudio-2 midi controller /w FL Keys
Music Software: Fl Studio 7
Video Capture Software: CamStudio
Video edited in Windows Movie Maker

By the way, could I ask you to take a listen to a song I made in FL Studio? It’s my first one and I could really use the feedback. Just click on my screenname to go to my channel, and it’s the only video there haha. Thanks!

Wow man, that was quality stuff! I just have one question. What are the strings that you used called, where did you get them, how much did they cost, etc etc? Haha I’ve been looking for a good orchestral sound forever and i can’t find one that doesn’t break the bank…anyway, like I said, this is absolutely impeccable!

Sounds amazing, ive …
Sounds amazing, ive been using music 2000 for years, and just my piano and a 16 track etc, and have just got fruity loops…it looks…very complicated, but ill stick with it cos i need the drums and stuff it has. I like making songs i can sing along too, some on my channel if you want to check them out, and hopefully if i can work fruity loops sometime soon you might hear an improvement. But this is excellent, 5 stars from me.

At 1:18 a nice smooth electric guitar melody would work great. Also, have you thought about using a slap bass with some pitch bend starting at 0:43? I don’t think the bass is being utilized enough here. The song is great and you did a wonderful job with it regardless. 0:30 hit’s perfect.
