Where can I learn to install PEX?
December 9th, 2009 | by admin |I have hard well water. My copper tubing is leaking thru pinholes in about eight places now (all repaired, but the latest is in the ceiling above the kitchen!! Grrr!)
I’ll be installing a good filter, but it seems like the smart thing to do is install Pex tubing.
So where can I learn to do it right?
I’m not a plumber, but I don’t want to learn by trial and error!
I figure I’ll do the job, then sell the tools.
Installing PEX is not a hard job. However by sure that local codes will allow you to do the job yourself.
The most popular three ways to install the PEX tubing are:
1- crimp on sleeves and press in fittings.
2- compression fittings
3- press-lock type fittings..
Now for a closer look at each system.
1- The crimp on system is the least expensive for fittings and connections. You simply side a stainless steel band over the line (don’t use the copper or aluminum bands they will corrode over time and break) insert a fitting and then crimp with a special crimper.( the crimper cost about $100 -$120) Also be sure the crimper is adjusted correctly so that the band is secured properly.
2- the compression type system uses an fitting that has a grip ring to hold the tube and a plastic compression ring that grips ans seals the connection. This type is also known as Qest fittings.
3- Quick connect fittings are the newest and easiest to use they simply press and lock on. They can finished behind walls and also buried. They also can be released from the tubing and changed or used in another location..
The links below show more details on the PEX tubing and each of these fitting types.
Hope this helps

It might make better sence to rent the tools.
To find out how to use the tools go to the web site of the tool manufacturer and download the manual

At the application level, PEX is employed the same as copper or other traditional materials.
The connections, however, differ from manufacturer to manufacturer.
While the PEX pipe itself will usually work across brands, the fittings and the method of mechanical retention varies greatly.
Good news! The place where you buy your PEX and fittings should be able to show you how to use the product. If they don’t, go down the street where they appreciate your patronage.
You have scores of manufacturers to choose from.
